Creative writing is a form of art or narrative craft which one must learn by paying heed to its elements. We might not agree on every element but there are a few which are the most important and cannot be ignored anyhow. You must better understand the right tools and ways of using these elements to make sure that your writing gets understood and appreciated by the readers or critics.
Character
Character is the most important element of creative writing which drives the entire story. It may be human, animate, or fictional which depends entirely upon you. However, it is also important for the readers to identify the characters of creative writing to get involved in the reading and imagination properly.
Setting
Setting in creative writing refers to the historical time and geographical location of the story. It helps make a mood and environment for the reader to read your creative writing. It also includes a context except the surroundings to make sure that the reader understands your story even better. The other forms of setting include constructed world, dystopia, fantasy world, fictional city or country, future history, mythical place, virtual reality, parallel universe, utopia, and so many more. So, it is very important to consider the setting as important as other components of creative writing.
Style
Style is another element of creative writing which is known as the specific way of the writer to tell a story. It is very important for the writers to decide their tone, point of view, narrator, voice, grammar, choice of words, imagery, punctuation, cohesion, and other important components which help shape their specific styles for the creative writing.
Theme
The theme is misunderstood as the set of ideas. But it is certainly more than that as it is referred to the “moral of the story” or any greater purpose for which you would choose to write. You must decide your theme first to make sure that your point of views and ideas support it. It would help make your story a strong piece of creative writing. It is suggested to avoid the use of stereotypes and prejudices while selecting a theme or idea. Otherwise, it would give the readers the impression that you are trying to control their thoughts by imposing your point of view.
Dialogue
The use of dialogue in creative writing must also be understood if you want to do it right. It is a verbal exchange of words between two or more characters of a story. However, if there is only one character who is talking or thinking, it would be considered as a “monologue”. You can use the word “said” as an identifier which is recommended by most of the expert writers who have mastered the art of writing dialogues.
There are many other elements as well so you can’t even imagine acing the creating writing without having a good understanding and usage of its elements. Even if you can’t use all of them in your writing, you must at least know about them to be able to write better.
