Democracy refers to the power given to the public to protect their rights. It is the Government of people which is run by them to ensure their welfare and safety. It also helps in upgrading different societies and communities for the development of the country and world. Democracy in India has been prevailed since after Independence. It was the time when all of the focus shifted towards establishing the constitutions. It was not the end of the struggle because India had to face a lot of ups and downs throughout.
The real challenge for the Government of India after Independence in 1947 was to develop a democratic nation that promotes justice, equality, and liberty. Even today, the people of India have equal political rights when it comes to selecting a party. Also, there is not any discrimination based on caste, race, creed, color, and sect. This principle of political equality also helps to keep the leaders and political figures accountable and responsible as they are being chosen by the public. Furthermore, the chances of political representatives to misuse the system or take advantage of it for any personal gain are quite low.
Democracy in India also works on another important principle that is ‘freedom of speech’. It allows the natives or citizens to express their thoughts, ideas, and opinions through any medium. It helps make sure that the voice of every single individual is being heard by the whole fraternity. Also, the institutions and Government take the public voice into account while making important decisions on their behalf. Even the legislation of India allows the public to express their opinions while making any law. This way, a collective responsibility lies on Indians, both public and authorities, for any law, act, or the constitution of the Government.
There are different ways to promote and strengthen democracy in India. The first and most important thing to avoid for that matter is having the blind faith in the media. A lot of news channels or reporters are working for a particular political party. The public only gets to see that side of the picture the media wants to reveal. So, every individual must be careful while accepting any news or updates. Also, the media should realize its responsibility and avoid presenting the half-truth to mislead the Indians. The other best thing to do is to take the elections seriously and participate in them for legit reasons instead of treating them as a consumer product.
In conclusion, the democracy in India is a gift for the citizens. They must realize its value to be able to make the best use of it. Although it is unique and effective, the Indian Government still has a long way to go. It is important to take steps to eliminate injustice, illiteracy, discrimination, and poverty to enjoy the democracy of India in every possible way. Moreover, people must take an active part in it and acknowledge the power they have to contribute towards the betterment of the country.
